Graffiti found on CB
Graffiti was discovered early Nov. 24 on the exterior of the Classroom Building.
The building, which current houses the Dallas International School, had a message with profanity on the east wall facing the administration building, said Assistant Director of Facilities Services Sam Eicke.
Facilities management crews used a chemical designed for graffiti removal to clean the area, but some markings were still visible. The wall will need to be repainted, Eicke said.
The removal has cost approximately $150 in labor thus far, and the UTD police are involved, Eicke said.
UTD Police Capt. Steve Finney said graffiti is automatically a state jail felony when it occurs on a building at an institution of higher education.
A state jail felony carries a penalty of up to two years in a state prison and fines up to $10,000. Penalties can be more severe if incidences of graffiti are linked and if the combined cost of repair is more than $20,000, Finney said.
Flies bugging SU students, staff
Exterminators treated the Student Union Nov. 26 to combat small flies present throughout the building in late November, said Mary Walters, director of student activities.
Walters said the source of the insects remains undetermined, but environments such as stagnant water from construction, water in the loading dock or a dead animal near the building may have produced the pesky pests.
Correction: In the Nov. 17 story, "Conference Center tar fumes raise a stink, displace five classes", quotes from Assistant Director of Facilities Services Sam Eicke were attributed to Richard Dempsey, associate vice president for Facilities Management. The Mercury regrets this error.
