APO hosts ninth camp for RISD kids

The service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega (APO) will be teaching the ninth annual Math and Science Camp (MSC) on Oct. 11.

Children in third through ninth grades at four Richardson Independent School District schools will come to UTD to further their education and learn skills that will help them in their later lives, said biology sophomore Kristen Schroeder, APO vice president of service and MSC co-chair.

Many of the children are from underprivileged Hispanic families, said telecommunications engineering junior and APO member Gianfranco Herrera.

APO is expecting about 200 kids and will need all of their approximately 50 members, half of whom are new pledges. Everything will be provided for free to the kids and the volunteers, including a pizza lunch and goodie bags for the volunteers, Schroeder said.

Four of UTD's seven schools have provided funding for MSC, and APO is still looking for donations from the others and from outside groups.

For more information, e-mail contact@apo-aez.org or visit APO's website at www.apo-aez.org.

SG unveils new forum for students

Student Government's (SG) student forum is polished, revamped and ready for use, according to SG President Steven Rosson, business administration junior.

Rosson said the student forum is intended to be a communication tool for facilitating dialogue between students and SG senators. It also includes tools that allow for students to suggest classes to professors or for professors to suggest classes to students and gauge their interest.

"We've got the forum tied into the university's servers, so all students need to log on is their NetID," Rosson said.

Forum topics include academics where students can post about grading policies, advising and general academic issues, campus housing for concerns about Waterview Park and University Village, and even a topic for parking concerns.

"We don't typically get a large number of students at SG meetings," Rosson said. "But, this forum allows them a way to interact with their senators. I think it will promote communication."
