Freshmen housing overcrowded

Lack of space in Phase VIII of University Village (UV) has led to freshmen overflow into other phases not traditionally used to house freshmen.

As a result, UTD administators have taken measures to house the overflow and keep freshmen involved in available student life programs.

Matt Grief, director of housing operations, said UV received more applications for housing than space allows.

As a result, some freshmen will be housed two to a bedroom, Grief said. Some freshmen will also be housed in phases V through VII of UV

Randi Mogul, freshmen residential life coordinator, said the peer advisors in phases V through VII have been informed of the units in their buildings that house freshmen.

Exhibition goes out with a bang

Work by arts and performance senior Michael Westfried is on display until Aug. 8 in the Mezzanine Gallery.

The body of work - that looks like attractive nightmares manifested on canvas and latex - is the result of an curious process involving pouring latex onto a painting and then ripping it off after it dries.

Westfried is also doing something rather unusual by having a big closing event rather than an opening for his show.

More of Westfried's work along with rappers Lockes, C-swag, The Boogie Man and the band Maple Crescent will be featured at the closing event at 7:00 p.m. on Aug. 13 in the Visual Arts Gallery.

Ice hockey team faces off

Starting Sept. 6, players on a new UTD ice hockey team will begin their season in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) league as part of UTD recreational sports.

They are currently competing in the B Adult League at the Dr. Peppers Star Center in Plano that started on June 16.
