This year UTD will host the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) conference Oct. 22-24 and welcome representatives from many college unions in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.

Participating unions will include Southern Methodist University, Rice University, UT-Arlington, University of North Texas, Loyola University and the University of Arkansas.

Student Union Director and Assistant Dean of Students Phyllis Blanck said that by hosting this conference, UTD is establishing itself as a university interested in the best student services and activities for its students.

Also the Host Director for the ACUI conference, Blanck said learning and sharing from our colleagues is a wonderful way to experience new ideas that we can bring back to our own union. She added hosting the conference shows that UTD is committed to being a part of a larger student life community that exists for professionals in the field.

"It is beneficial to our students if we stay current on what is happening around the region at various student unions and college campuses," Blanck said. "It is fun to share ideas and see what other unions offer."

Blanck said the theme for this conference is "Another Great Re-UNION," which refers to Reunion Tower in downtown Dallas and the use of the word "union," referring to the focus on student unions.

The conference has scheduled recreational events for those in attendance, all of which will be held in the UTD Student Union, according to an ACUI schedule. The fun will commence with a pre-conference golf tournament the morning of Oct. 22. That evening, there will be "entertainment extravaganza" with events like Pictionary, Poetry Slam and a College Bowl Competition - locations for these events have yet to be determined.

Saturday's events will include educational break-out sessions beginning at 8:45 a.m., a silent auction and graphics design competition from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and a recognition dinner beginning at 5:30 p.m. The conference will close Sunday with a Jazz Brunch at 9 a.m. to be followed by closing ceremonies.

The Association of College Unions International is a nonprofit educational organization founded in 1914. According to its web site, it is a professional membership organization for people who work in student unions. It aims to provide communication, professional development and support to members who serve students at the university level.

Last year, the conference was hosted in Austin jointly by the UT-Austin and St. Edwards University.
