The regents announced as finalists Baldwin, associate provost for health affairs at Dartmouth College; Thomas J. Barton, professor of chemistry at Iowa State University and director of the Ames National Laboratory; and Gary B. Schuster, professor of chemistry and dean of the College of Science at Georgia Institute of Technology.
Baldwin's visit will include an open forum for students, faculty, staff and community members from 1:45-3:15 p.m., Oct. 19 in the School of Management (SOM) Auditorium.
Schuster will visit the following week on Oct. 25 and 26. His open forum will take place from 1:45-3:15 p.m., Oct. 26, also in the SOM Auditorium.
Barton will visit during October, but his dates have yet to be announced.
While the 18-member search committee had submitted four finalists for the post, one applicant withdrew from consideration during the weekend prior to the Oct. 11-12 meeting.
"It's always hard to know (whether candidates will remain in consideration). Ideally, there would have been five great candidates," said Bert Moore, search committee member and UTD dean of the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences. He added, "I would be more comfortable if there were four candidates we were bringing to campus (for) interviews."
But the overall attitude toward the finalist list is positive.
While the field of finalists reflected an emphasis on scientific research, Teresa Sullivan, search committee chair and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, said each of the candidates is well-rounded.
"Each of these three people also has phenomenal records in undergraduate instruction. The two chemists are award-winning, and Dr. Baldwin, although he was a physician, was allowed to teach history at Yale ... to undergraduates," Sullivan said.
The UTD community will have the opportunity to assess the field of finalists, during the series of two-day campus visits by each candidate. Participants are advised to complete feedback forms available at the forums that will be submitted to the regents for review before they make the final decision.
