Five goals in one game, including three in one half? Check.
Conference championship? Check back in a month.
Comet forward Natalie Taylor kept up her torrid early-season pace, helping UTD jump out to a flawless 3-0 conference record, and she thinks the Comets are ready to compete with anybody.
"We lost two games and since then we've kept our intensity level up. We're on the right track," the junior said.
Taylor's five-goal performance came during UTD's 8-0 domination of the Ozarks - the last match of a three-game series that opened American Southwestern Conference (ASC) play Sept. 25.
"It was a whole team effort. Jessica Beachy had the first three assists. It's kind of hard to score without people feeding me the ball," Taylor said.
Head Coach John Antonisse said the team changes its strategy to ensure that their star players have ample scoring opportunities.
"We try to find Taylor and (sophomore forward Theresa) Buckles a lot. That's a big part of our game plan. They have the ability to attack very, very dangerously. Natalie was the recipient of a lot a good passes and did a great job putting them away," he said.
UTD scored early and often and limited the Ozarks to just one shot all game.
Freshmen Lyndsi Ayers and Catherine Fox and sophomore Tiffany Knobloch also tallied goals in the offensive onslaught. Knobloch's strike was her fifth of the season.
Two days earlier, Austin College came to town and the Comets were not very polite hosts. UTD peppered Austin College goalie Alyssa Condon with 23 shots and enjoyed a significant time-of-possession advantage, en route to a 3-1 victory.
Austin College got on the board first - converting a corner kick in the ninth minute - but the Comets responded with three scores by halftime. Sophomore Robin Kappes evened the score in the 16th minute, and Knobloch propelled UTD into the lead 12 minutes later. Sophomore Annette Davila added an insurance goal in the waning minutes of the half.
