Idol auditions limit set to '69
By: Alex Ransom
Aspiring singers may have their excitement dashed by a stipulation to try-outs for University Idol on Feb. 17-18. Only one year of the wealth of available music counts, 1969.
The requirement that song selection can only be from 1969 may squelch some copy-cat renditions of “Pants on the Ground”, but at what cost? Bryan Adams’ “Summer of ‘69” would not make the cut.
1969 brought the world “Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival and “Come Together” by the Beatles, but come on, some singers can best express themselves in different styles of music from other decades.
At least a decade of music would offer more selection. “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5 sums up my thoughts about whether students should be able to pick their particular song with more freedom to do so.
