With the lyrics written and the tune chosen, the UTD fight song is in its final stage of development.
"Our Flirtation" by John Phillip Sousa is the tune that the fight song would follow and is on public domain.
If a song is in public domain then it is not protected by copyright and can be used by anyone. A song may no longer be under copyright if the copyright has expired, a copyright was not granted due to the authors' failure to properly file for copyright or the work is by the U.S. Government, according to the website, www.copyright.gov
"We looked at a bunch [of songs], but we picked it in particular because it was empowering and aggressive enough to be a fight song," Student Government (SG) President Ben Dower said. "It had very regular beats, so it was good to put to words and put to a chant so everyone can do it."
The Fight Song Committee, who expanded on last year's work on the song, finalized the lyrics and tune at its Aug. 28 meeting.
"The original fight song, which we talked about last year, was more of a song, and then the occasional person would chirp in, but this should be easier for greater participation," Dower said.
The need for a fight song was voiced Fall 2006 by molecular biology senior Felicity Lenes, who was at the time SG Vice President and molecular biology senior Juliann Peterson, a SG senator.
"Certainly we have a spirit program which does a fantastic job, but we wanted to give them as much help as we could," Lenes said. "We wanted to do something that people would get intuitively and marches are pretty simple rhythmically."
The fight song, once made official, will be used to promote school spirit at sports games, rally events and other UTD related activities. The tentative lyrics are currently being circulated throughout campus organizations, so that the Fight Song Committee may gain feedback from students and improve the lyrics if necessary.
