A campus alert issued on April 21 for an alleged attempted sexual assault was cancelled two days later, following an investigation by UTD police. Police determined the reported incident did not occur.

"The person we had listed in the previous crime alert is no longer a threat," assistant chief of UTD police Debra Marable said. "There's no threat at all to the campus community at this time."

The initial alert was issued after a female biology undergraduate reported an undergraduate black male attempted to sexually assault her in the Founders North Building.

Within hours of the posting of the crime alerts a male individual was identified, in connection with this case, and was "fully cooperating with this investigation," said Lt. Steve Finney with the UTD police on April 22.

Before police rescinded the crime alert Finney said the alleged incident involved no injuries or use of weapons, and it is believed to be an isolated incident. More police might be seen near where the reported attempted sexual assault occurred.

In an early stage of the investigation evidence had been collected, and it was determined that the female may have known the male to a very limited extent, Finney said

Crime alerts were posted in Waterview Park Apartments, University Village Apartments and on campus in accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, informally known as the Clery Act.

The Clery Act was named in memory of freshman Jeanne Clery, who was raped and murdered on April 5, 1986, while asleep in her residence hall room at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Penn., according to securityoncampus.org.

Printed in the campus alerts, UTD police suggest students walk in groups of two or more, remain aware of their surroundings and have keys ready when walking to a car or apartment. Suspicious circumstances or persons should be reported to the UTD Police Department at 972-883-2331.
