Former homeland security secretary talks risky business
The School of Management (SOM) will host the sixth annual National Corporate Governance Conference on Oct. 1, highlighted by global leaders from government and industry. Headlining the event is Tom Ridge, former governor of Pennsylvania and first U.S. Secretary for Homeland Security.
Other speakers include Reatha Clark, director of ExxonMobil and Jeffrey Armitage, senior risk manager for Fannie Mae.
The conference will discuss strategies companies can use for managing risk relating to globally scarce commodities, such as oil, national security and international commerce, said Constantine Konstans, executive director of SOM's Institute for Excellence in Corporate Governance (IECG).

Green Fellowship apps due by Oct. 10
Green Fellowship applications are now available to students majoring in biochemistry, chemistry, molecular and cell biology, electrical engineering, computer science and have completed two years of study at UTD. Fellows receive training, research experience and a stipend of $3,500.
Applications are available at www.utsouthwestern.edu/greenfellows and are due Oct. 10.
Safety policies revamped
Disasters, whether natural or man-made, can happen at anytime, and it is important that UTD be fully prepared, according to Dorothy Miller, executive director for Emergency Management. As part of this effort, the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is updating evacuation and sheltering-in-place procedures campus-wide.
In addition to reworking evacuation plans for individual buildings in the case of fire, chemical spill or structural failure, OEM is informing students and faculty of the updated policies and has installed 16 signs to mark designated evacuation assembly areas.
