UTD chess team to compete in Cuba

UTD President David Daniel said Vice President of Diversity and Community Engagement Magaly Spector, cleared the last hurdle for UTD's chess team to head to Cuba on Oct. 15.

The chess team had to get a special license from the Treasury Department to send their top players, said James Stallings, chess program director.

A journalist and photographer from The Dallas Morning News will accompany the team.

Magaly Spector said she "hopes to create solidarity with the people of Cuba" during the chess team's visit.

Unaffiliated man found dead in apt.

Ryan Sullivan, an unaffiliated 22-year-old, was found dead when police arrived at the scene at 10:54 a.m. in Building 33 of Waterview Park Apartments.

The toxicology report takes four to six weeks to become available, so the cause of death has not been officially determined, according to the Colin County Medical Examiner's Office. This test is standard procedure in autopsies for unintended death procedures.

"It's not like CSI. It takes time to do tests," said UTD Police Sgt. Rick Bauer. "It's still an ongoing investigation."

Blackboard fix planned

Technical problems that caused down time for Blackboard's eLearning systems will likely be resolved after a fix slated for Oct. 4, according to Information Resources.

The fix is intended to resolve an issue between eLearning and the database, which is second party software.

UV apartments flood after fire

A grease fire on the third floor of Building 67 in University Village triggered sprinklers, which flooded three units on Sept. 19.

The sprinklers put out the kitchen fire, but complicated the situation when water poured through cutouts for electrical plugs and lighting into the two rooms below it.

"The way the building is connected, the water doesn't have any place to go except down," said Matt Grief, director of housing operations.

The Richardson Fire Department responded and recommended shutting off power to the rooms due to the risk of electrical shock, Grief said.

Maintenance staff for University Village cleaned up the three units, and displaced residents were able to return to their apartments the evening of Sept. 20.

The walls were repainted, the carpet replaced and a new microwave purchased as a result of the water damage in the following days.

None of the residents affected by the fire or water were harmed, Grief said.
