A peace symbol was spray painted Oct. 30 on the side of the Visual Arts Studio, along with four other incidents of graffiti.

Four peace signs and an anarchy symbol were spray-painted on campus Oct. 30, according to Physical Plant officials.

The graffiti was reported by UTD police officers Oct. 30 and may have been connected with Halloween.

An anarchy symbol was spray-painted with the "A" of the west Activity Center Sign that faces Drive A. The four peace symbols were painted on: the outside of the Visual Art Studio, backside of the campus directory sign in the Student Union mall, south entrance walkway into the Student Union and a tree in between the Multipurpose and Jonsson Buildings.

Physical Plant officials said the Activity Center sign and Student Union walkway were relatively easy to clean, using either a pressure washer or wire brush, but the building and directory sign required special cleaner.

Sam Eicke, landscape supervisor, said graffiti remover was purchased to remove the spray paint without removing the building or sign paint, since the outside of the buildings aren't usually cleaned.

"We've had some graffiti on campus, but this would be a new thing for me," Eicke said.

Two controversial speakers - Gen. Tommy Franks and Candace Gingrich - attended UTD prior to the vandalism. But, police said they do not suspect the vandalism is connected with the speeches.

"We have no reasons to believe that it's related to any of the speakers," said Steve Finney, senior detective.

No arrests have been made for the incidents, according to police.

"We are investigating all leads. We would hope that if anyone has information regarding the incidents that they would come forward," Finney added.
